Key Concepts for the Board
Singular: Means one person, animal, place, or thing. (e.g., one book)
Plural: Means more than one (two, three, or many) person, animal, place, or thing. (e.g., three books)
Lesson Presentation
Step 1: Regular Plurals - Adding '-s' and '-es' (12 Minutes)
The teacher explains that most nouns are friendly and just need an -s at the end to mean "many."
Rule 1 (Add -s): For standard words.
1 boy→ 2 boys
1 cup → 5 cups
1 tree →many trees
Rule 2 (Add -es): If a word ends in a hissing or buzzing sound like ch, sh, s, x, or z, it gets too noisy! We add -es to make it easy to say.
box →3 boxes
1 dish → 4 dishes
1 dress →2 dresses
1 church → many churches
o
Step 2: Irregular Plurals - The Rule Breakers (10 Minutes)
Introduce "rebel words." These words change their entire spelling or shape when they become plural. They never accept an "-s" or "-es".
One (Singular) | Many (Irregular Plural) | What Changed? |
man | men | a changes to e |
woman | women | a changes to e |
child | children | adds -ren |
tooth | teeth | oo changes to ee |
foot | feet | oo changes to ee |
mouse | mice | changes completely |
Teacher's Alert Trick: "Never say mans or childrens! Those words do not exist in our English playground."
Step 3: Sentence Structure Practice (8 Minutes)
Show pupils how the verbs in a sentence change to match the plural noun. We use is for one, and are for many.
Singular: The child is playing. → Plural: The children are playing.
Singular: My tooth is white. → Plural: My teeth are white.
Singular: The box is heavy.→ Plural: The boxes are heavy.
Step 4: Oral Drill Game - "One to Many" (5 Minutes)
The teacher calls out a singular noun and points to a pupil. The pupil must rapidly shout back the correct plural form.
· Teacher: "One match!" → Pupil: "Two matches!"
· Teacher: "One foot!" → Pupil: "Two feet!"
· Teacher: "One brush!" → Pupil: "Three brushes!"
