1st Term Week 9 Basic science Lesson Note: Air (Part 2) for Primary 2

Week 9: Air (Part 2)

💡 Teacher's Overview & Guide
  • Subject: Basic Science and Technology
  • Class: Primary 2
  • Term: First Term, Week 9
  • Duration: 40 Minutes
  • Instructional Materials: A bucket of water, a clear plastic drinking cup, a kite or light paper strip, pictures of sailboats or windmills.
  • Textbook Guide: Refer to the "Properties and Uses of Air" page in the approved textbook.

Teacher's Note: The water bucket experiment is perfect for showing that air takes up space. Pushing an empty cup straight down into water traps air inside it.

Behavioral Objectives

By the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. List the basic physical properties of air.
  2. Demonstrate that air takes up space and has weight.
  3. State three everyday uses of air and distinguish between clean and dirty air.

Presentation Steps

  1. Introduction to Properties: Ask pupils to smell the air, then taste it. Explain that clean air has **no color (transparent), no smell, and no taste**.
  2. Air Takes Up Space & Has Weight: Show an empty cup. Push it upside down into a bucket of water. Tilt it slightly to let air escape as bubbles. This proves air was inside taking up space. Mention that heavy wind pushes things because air has weight.
  3. Everyday Uses of Air: Discuss how humans harness air: breathing, drying washed clothes on a line, flying kites, winnowing chaff from grains, and sailing boats.
  4. Clean vs. Dirty Air: Explain that healthy air is clean. Smoke from cars, burning rubbish, and dust make the air dirty (polluted) and cause coughing.

📝 Short Board Note for Pupils

WEEK 9
TOPIC: AIR (PART 2)

Properties of Air:

  • It has no color (It is clear/transparent).
  • It has no taste and no smell.
  • Air occupies space and has weight.

Uses of Air and Wind:

  • We use air for breathing.
  • Wind helps to fly kites and sail boats on the water.
  • It helps dry our wet clothes.
  • It turns windmills to generate power.

Health Rule: Avoid breathing dirty air filled with smoke or dust because it makes us sick.

Evaluation & Assessment

  • What are the three "nos" of clean air? (No color, no smell, no taste).
  • How do bubbles in a pool or bucket prove air is present?
  • What makes our environment's air dirty?
