Class: Primary 2 (1st Term, Week 1)
Duration: 45 Minutes
Learning Objectives: By the end of this lesson, pupils will be able to:
Recall and say basic letter sounds (phonics) and read 3-letter words.
Read short, simple sentences aloud with confidence.
Hear and match simple rhyming words.
Correctly use capital letters and full stops.
Speak in simple sentences using the present tense.
1. Sound & Word Power-Up (Phonics Recall)
Let’s warm up our ears and mouths! In Primary 1, we learned that letters make special sounds.
Let’s practice our quick sounds:
s (like a snake: ssss)
a (like an ant on your arm: ah!)
t (like watching tennis: t-t-t)
p (like puffing out a candle: p-p-p)
i (like a squeaky mouse: ee-ee)
n (like a loud airplane: nnnn)
Sound Blending Game:
We stretch the sounds out, then clap them together to make a word!
Teacher says:
/c/ - /a/ - /t/... stretch it:caaaat... clap: CAT!
Let's try these together:
/p/ - /i/ - /n/→ PIN/h/ - /e/ - /n/→ HEN/d/ - /o/ - /g/→ DOG/b/ - /u/ - /g/→ BUG
2. Reading Aloud (Building Confidence)
Now, let's put those words into sentences. When we read aloud, we point to each word with our finger and use our "strong, clear voice."
Try reading these three sentences out loud:
The cat sat on a mat.
A big dog ran in the sun.
The red hen is in the pen.
3. The Rhyme Time Game
Rhyming words are words that have the same ending sound.
Listen closely:
Cat and Hat rhyme. They both end in -at.
Pin and Tin rhyme. They both end in -in.
Which one rhymes? (Oral Quiz)
Which word rhymes with Toy?
(Is it Boy or Bag?) → Boy!
Which word rhymes with Hen?
(Is it Pen or Pig?) → Pen!
Which word rhymes with Hop?
(Is it Sun or Mop?) → Mop!
4. Punctuation Patrol
Sentences need special road signs so we know how to read them. Today, we are reviewing two very important signs:
Capital Letters (): These always go at the very start of a sentence, and for names of people (like Tolu or Amara).
Full Stops (): This goes at the very end of a sentence to tell us to take a breath.
Be the Detective!
Can you spot the mistakes in this sentence and fix them?
wrong: the dog is wet
What is missing at the start? → A capital T!
What is missing at the end? → A full stop .!
correct: The dog is wet**.**
5. Speak in the "Now" (Simple Present Tense)
Let’s talk about what we do every day. We use simple action words (verbs).
Teacher & Pupil Action Game:
The teacher does an action, and the class says what is happening right now using "I [action]" or "He/She [actions]".
Teacher mimics drinking water:
Pupils say: "I drink water." / "She drinks water."
Teacher mimics jumping:
Pupils say: "I jump." / "He jumps."
Teacher mimics writing:
Pupils say: "I write." / "She writes."
Remember the golden rule:
If it is I, You, We, or They → we say run, eat, play.
If it is He, She, or It → we add an "s" → runs, eats, plays.
Quick Fun Homework/Classwork
Take out your exercise book and try these two tasks:
Fix the sentence:
my dad has a red car(Remember your Capital letter and Full Stop!)Find the rhyming partner: Draw a line to match the words that sound the same:
Cake → Lake / Sit
Pan → Hot / Van
Fin → Bin / Map
