Retelling a Story in Your Own Words
1. Reading Text: "Kofi's Lost Goat"
(Teacher Tip: Read this story aloud to the pupils twice. Read slowly, clearly, and use expressions or gestures to keep them engaged.)
Kofi lives with his parents in a small village near Ughelli. He has a favorite pet animal: a small white goat named Balo.
One sunny Tuesday morning, Kofi forgot to lock the wooden gate. Balo trotted out into the big green grass field to look for sweet leaves. When Kofi came back from his breakfast, he saw the open gate and cried, "Oh no! Where is Balo?"
Kofi ran fast to the green field. He looked behind the large mango tree, and there was Balo, happily chewing on a big green leaf! Kofi smiled, hugged his goat, and led him safely back home.
2. Understanding the Story (Factual Questions)
To understand a story, we must look for specific facts by asking helper questions like Who, What, and Where.
Who: Tells us about the people or animals in the story (Characters).
What: Tells us about the action or problem that happened.
Where: Tells us the place where the story happens (Setting).

3. Finding the Main Idea and Characters
Characters
The characters are the living things inside a story. In this story, the characters are:
Kofi (A young boy)
Balo (A playful white goat)
Main Idea
The main idea is what the story is mostly about.
The main idea of our story is: Kofi looks for his lost pet goat and finds it safely in the field.
4. Class Practice: How to Retell a Story
Retelling means telling the story to a friend using your own words instead of memorizing it perfectly. We can use a simple three-step path to do this:
Classwork / Evaluation Exercises
Part A: Listen and Answer
(Teacher reads the questions aloud, pupils write the short answers in their books)
Who is the story about?
What color is Balo the goat?
Where did Balo hide? (Behind what kind of tree?)
How did Kofi feel when he found his goat?
Part B: Speaking Exercise
Pair up with a seat partner and take turns telling the story of Kofi and Balo in your own words. Use your own voices!
