2. Match sentences describing routines accurately with corresponding illustrations or pictures.

3. Identify and distinguish between nouns (naming words) and verbs (action words) within the context of the reading.

4. Summarize the core message of a passage in one or two short sentences.

Teacher's Textbook Selection Guide

Note to the Teacher: Open your approved Primary 2 English textbook to the Third Term, Week 8 comprehension section.

What to look for: Select a passage focused on "Everyday Situations." Look for texts that describe a child’s daily timeline, such as waking up, performing morning chores, walking to school, or accompanying parents to the local market. These text types ensure the vocabulary consists of high-frequency nouns and verbs familiar to Primary 2 pupils.

Technical Concept Review for the Board

Before reading, do a quick baseline check on the board to refresh the pupils' grammar foundations using everyday classroom routines:

Noun (Naming Word) vs.Verb (Action Word)

Noun: The person, place, or thing doing or receiving the routine (e.g., school, mother, bucket, market, uniform).

Verb: The action being done in the routine (e.g., sweeps, walks, buys, reads, washes).

Presentation Steps

Step 1: Pre-Reading & Predicting Daily Routines (10 Minutes)

l Ask the pupils a warm-up question to activate their background knowledge: "What is the very first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?"

l List their responses on the board using a simple sequence (e.g., brush teeth → sweep room → bathe → eat breakfast).

l Direct the pupils to open to the assigned page in their textbook and look exclusively at the illustrations. Have them guess what the character's routine is based entirely on the drawings before reading a single word.

Step 2: Guided Reading & Picture Matching (10 Minutes)

Echo Reading: Read the passage out loud line by line. Have the pupils point their index fingers under each word and echo the sentence back to you with clarity.

Sentence-to-Picture Alignment: Read a specific sentence from the text (e.g., "Chidi sweeps the compound before sunrise"). Ask the pupils to point to the exact illustration in their book that matches that specific sentence. Walk around to ensure everyone is pointing to the correct image.

Step 3: Mining for Nouns and Verbs in Context (10 Minutes)

Write a sentence directly from the textbook passage onto the chalkboard.

Example: "Fatima carries a big basket to the market."

1. Call up individual pupils to interact with the sentence using colored chalk:

2. Draw a single line under the Nouns (naming words): Fatima, basket, market.

3. Draw a circle around the Verbs (action words): carries.

4. Repeat this process with one more sentence from the text, ensuring the children see how actions and objects connect in a daily routine.

Step 4: The Two-Sentence Summary Challenge (5 Minutes)

Explain that summarizing means telling someone what a long passage is about using just a tiny bit of breath.

Ask the class: "If you wanted to tell your friend what this story is about in just one or two sentences, what would you say?"

Guide them to formulate a clean, basic summary sentence (e.g., "The story is about how Tega helps his mother at the shop every Saturday," or "It shows the busy morning routine of a schoolboy"). Write the final summary cleanly on the board.
