Key Concepts for the Board

Verb: An action word / doing word. (e.g., run, speak, walk, write)

Adverb: A word that tells us how an action is done. It describes a verb. (Hint: Many adverbs end in -ly!)

Lesson Presentation

Step 1: Understanding Adverbs (10 Minutes)

The teacher introduces adverbs by performing an action in different ways and asking the pupils to describe it.

Action 1: The teacher walks very fast across the room.

Teacher: "How did I walk?" Pupils: "Quickly!"

Action 2: The teacher walks very sluggishly.

Teacher: "How did I walk now?" Pupils: "Slowly!"

Action 3: The teacher speaks in a booming voice, then in a tiny whisper.

Teacher: "First I spoke loudly, and then I spoke quietly."

Explain that quickly, slowly, loudly, and quietly are all adverbs because they tell us how the action happened.

Step 2: Adjectives vs. Adverbs (10 Minutes)

Help pupils see the difference using a clear comparison chart. Explain that adjectives describe things, while adverbs describe actions.

The Question

Part of Speech

Example Sentence

What kind of boy?

Adjective (Quiet)

Solomon is a quiet boy.

How does he read?

Adverb (Quietly)

Solomon reads quietly.

What kind of animal?

Adjective (Slow)

The snail is slow.

How does it move?

Adverb (Slowly)

The snail moves slowly.

Step 3: Sentence Structure Practice (8 Minutes)

Show pupils how to attach the adverb to the verb in a sentence.

1. The baby is crying The baby is crying loudly.

2. Pleasure writes Pleasure writes neatly.

3. The cheetah runs The cheetah runs quickly.

How to Play: The teacher gives an action command followed by an adverb. The entire class must instantly perform the action according to the adverb modifier.

Command 1: "Clap your hands... loudly!" (Pupils clap boisterously)

Command 2: "Clap your hands... quietly!" (Pupils tap fingertips together softly)

Command 3: "Stand up... slowly!" (Pupils rise in slow motion)

Command 4: "Wave your hands... quickly!" (Pupils wave their hands rapidly)
