Reactions between Acids and Metals, Their Oxides and Carbonates - WAEC TUTORIAL

Metals are known to react with acids resulting in the evolution of hydrogen gas. Only the metals which lie above the electrochemical or activity series can evolve hydrogen gas(Main
group). Thus the reactions of Na, K, Ca, Mg and Al with HCl are given below:
The rate of evolution of ~ gas is different in all the reactions because metals have different reactivity with HCl .,

REACTION OF METAL OXIDES WITH ACIDS
Metal oxides react with acids to produce salts and water
REACTIONS OF TRIOXOCARBONATE ( IV) WITH ACID
The metal carbonates react vigorously with acid like HCI to give strong effervescence along with evolution of carbon dioxide gas.
NATURE OF AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS OF OXIDES AND TRIOXOCARBONATE(IV)S
All the metals (Na, K, Ca, Mg) combine with oxygen to form metal oxides which are soluble in water. The aqueous solution of metal oxides in basic in character. The basic nature is supported by the fact that on dipping litmus paper in the solution of oxides, its colour changes.
The colour of litmus changes from red to blue. The aqueous solution of oxide of A12O3 is amphoteric in character and will not change the colour of litmus paper.
The aqueous solution of trioxocarbonates of metals (Na, K, Mg) are weakly basic in character and will change red litmus blue
