Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, pupils should be able to:

  1. Count, read, and write whole numbers from 1 to 100 in figures and words.

  2. Compare and order numbers up to 100 using Tens and Units place values.

  3. Skip-count accurately in 2s, 3s, 5s, and 10s.

  4. Identify and differentiate between odd and even numbers.

1. Counting, Reading, and Writing Numbers 1–100

Pupils will practice chanting numbers 1 to 100 using a hundreds chart. Writing numbers requires careful attention to place value alignment and the spelling of number words.

2. Comparing and Ordering Using Place Value (Tens & Units)

To compare numbers, look at the Tens position first. If the Tens are equal, look at the Units position.

Place Value Breakdown

  • 34 $=$ 3 Tens and 4 Units ($30 + 4$)

  • 52 $=$ 5 Tens and 2 Units ($50 + 2$)

Comparison Rule: 52 is greater than 34 because 5 Tens is greater than 3 Tens.

Ordering Arrangements

  • Ascending Order (Smallest to Largest): 12, 27, 45, 89

  • Descending Order (Largest to Smallest): 89, 45, 27, 12

3. Skip Counting Drills

Skip counting builds foundational mental agility for multiplication. Pupils can use the following sequences for guidance:

1.Skip Counting in 2s:Interval of 2.

Add 2 to the previous number:

2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20

2.Skip Counting in 3s:Interval of 3.

Add 3 to the previous number:

3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30

3.Skip Counting in 5s:Interval of 5.

Add 5 to the previous number (numbers always end in 5 or 0):

5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50

4.Skip Counting in 10s:Interval of 10.

Add 10 to the previous number (counting by clean tens):

10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 100

4. Odd and Even Numbers

Numbers can be grouped based on whether they can be shared equally into pairs.

  • Even Numbers: Numbers that can be divided into pairs evenly with no remainder. They always end in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8.

  • Odd Numbers: Numbers that leave a remainder of 1 when paired. They always end in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9.
