The alkali
metals are a series of elements comprising: lithium (Li), sodium (Na),
potassium (K), rubidium (Rb), caesium (Cs), and francium (Fr). The alkali metals are
all in group 1 beginning from period 2 to 7.
Though under extremely high pressure, hydrogen can
become metallic and then behaves like an alkali metal).
The alkali metals
are found in the group 1 alone beginning from the period 2 to 7 of the
periodic table.
They are all highly reactive and tend not to be
found in elemental form in nature.
They have the lowest ionisation energy in their respective periods, as
removing the single electron from the outermost shell gives them the stable
noble gas configuration. But their second ionisation potentials are very high,
as removing an electron from a species having a noble gas configuration is very
difficult.
