Lesson Objectives

By the end of this lesson, the pupils should be able to:

l Identify and use common simple past tense verbs (e.g., went, played, danced).

l Identify and use common simple future tense verbs using the helper will (e.g., will go, will play, will dance).

l Formulate clear questions and full-sentence answers regarding past and future events.

l Participate confidently in a structured conversation role-play about "yesterday" and "tomorrow."

Key Concepts for the Chalkboard

The Past Timeline (Yesterday): The action is already finished. We often add -ed or change the word completely.

Go → Went | Play → Played | Dance → Danced

The Future Timeline (Tomorrow): The action has not happened yet. We always add the magic word WILL before the action.

Will go | Will play | Will dance

Presentation Steps

Step 1: Navigating the Time Machine (10 Minutes)

Draw a straight timeline across the chalkboard to visually separate past, present, and future zones.

Oral Drill: Call out an everyday action word (e.g., jump). Have the class snap their fingers to the left for the past ("jumped") and point their hands forward to the right for the future ("will jump").

Step 2: Sentence Structure & Question Formation (10 Minutes)

Teach the pupils how to switch their verbs smoothly depending on the question asked. Show them how the question structure guides their answer.

Case 1: The Past (Asking about Yesterday)

Question: "What did you do yesterday?"

Incorrect: "I will play football yesterday."

Correct: "I played football yesterday."

Case 2: The Future (Asking about Tomorrow)

Question: "What will you do tomorrow?"

Incorrect: "I went to the market tomorrow."

Correct: "I will go to the market tomorrow."

Step 3: Interactive Role-Play - "The Time Travelers" (10 Minutes)

Divide the classroom into pairs (Pupil A and Pupil B).

Round 1 (The Past): Pupil A turns to Pupil B, shakes their hand, and asks: "What did you do yesterday?" Pupil B must answer with a full sentence using a past tense verb: "Yesterday, I helped my mother."

Round 2 (The Future): Pupil B turns to Pupil A and asks: "What will you do tomorrow?" Pupil A must respond using the future tense helper: "Tomorrow, I will read my book."

Teacher's Walkabout: Circulate the room during the role-play to ensure pupils aren't mixing timelines (e.g., catching errors like "I will danced").

Have the pupils copy and complete these exercises in their notebooks:

Exercise A: Fill in the blank with the correct verb from the bracket

1. Yesterday, my sister and I _______________ beautifully at the party. (danced, will dance)

2. Tomorrow morning, the class _______________ to the school garden. (went, will go)

Exercise B: Fix the Broken Sentence 

l  Rewrite this sentence so it makes perfect sense:

l Sentence: Yesterday, Solomon will go to the village river.

1. Write down two full sentences telling your teacher what you did last weekend during the holiday.

 

2. Write down two full sentences telling your teacher what you will do during the next long school vacation. (Hint: Remember to use the word will!)
