Term: First Term

Week: Week 7

Class: Primary 2

Subject: English Language (Grammar)

Topic: Adjectives: Describing Words

Sub-Topics:

  • Introduction to Adjectives

  • Describing People, Animals, and Objects

  • Using Adjectives to Make Sentences

1. What is an Adjective?

An adjective is a word that tells us more about a noun (a person, animal, place, or thing). We call adjectives describing words because they describe how something looks, feels, tastes, smells, or sounds.

Without adjectives, our sentences would be plain! Adjectives add color, size, and shape to our words.

2. Describing People, Animals, and Objects

We use different types of describing words depending on what we are looking at. Here are some common examples your pupils can easily see around the classroom or at home:

Examples of Describing Words

Type of AdjectiveWhat it Tells UsExamples
SizeHow big or small something istall, short, big, small, fat, thin
ColorThe color of the objectred, blue, green, yellow, black, white
ConditionHow something looks or feelsnew, old, clean, dirty, happy, sad

Let's Picture It!

  • A tall man / A short boy 🚶‍♂️🚶‍♂️

  • A big elephant / A small rat 🐘🐁

  • A red apple / A blue pen 🍎🖊️

3. Classroom Practice: Matching Words to Objects

To help pupils understand, the teacher can hold up real objects or draw simple pictures on the chalkboard and have the class call out the correct describing word.

1.Look at Size:Step 1.

The teacher holds up a long ruler and a broken, short pencil.

  • Teacher asks: "Is this pencil big or small?"

  • Pupils answer: "Small!"

2.Look at Colors:Step 2.

The teacher points to a blue school uniform or a red plastic bucket.

  • Teacher asks: "What color word describes this bucket?"

  • Pupils answer: "Red!"

3.Combine the Words:Step 3.

Put the size and the color together to describe an animal or object.

  • Example: A big black dog. 🐕

4. Making Sentences with Adjectives

When we write sentences, the describing word usually comes before the naming word (noun), or after the word is.

  • Example 1: This is a blue shirt.

  • Example 2: The tree is tall.

  • Example 3: I saw a small cat.
