1. Reading Text: "The Tortoise and the Magic Drum"

(Teacher Tip: Read this traditional folktale aloud to the pupils using a clear, expressive storytelling voice. Mimic a tortoise's slow speech to keep the children engaged.)

Long ago, a clever but greedy tortoise named Mbe lived in a small village right at the edge of the great forest near Ughelli.

One dusty afternoon, Mbe found a shiny magic drum lying under an iroko tree. When he beat the drum, delicious plates of rice, beans, and sweet plantains suddenly appeared out of thin air! First, Mbe carried the drum home secretly and ate until his tummy was completely full. Next, instead of sharing the magic with his hungry neighbors, he hid the drum inside his dark bedroom so he could keep all the food for himself.

Finally, because Mbe was so greedy, he beat the magic drum too hard and cracked it! The magic broke instantly, and instead of food, the broken drum sprayed out soapy water that washed all his items away. Mbe was left with nothing but an empty stomach.

2. Finding the Characters and Setting

When we listen to a folktale, we always look out for who is in the story and where it is taking place.

  • The Main Character: This is the most important individual in the story. In our folktale, the main character is Mbe the Tortoise.

  • The Setting: This is the place where the story happens. The setting of our story is a small village near Ughelli, under an iroko tree and inside Mbe's house.

3. Retelling Stories with Time Order Words

To tell a story to a friend in the correct order so it makes sense, we use three special sequencing words: First, Next, and Finally.

1.Use FIRST for the beginning:Step 1.

Tell what happened at the very start of the story.

Example: "First, Mbe the tortoise found a magic drum that made delicious food and took it home."

2.Use NEXT for the middle action:Step 2.

Tell what the character did after that.

Example: "Next, he was greedy and hid the drum in his room so his neighbors could not eat any food."

3.Use FINALLY for the ending:Step 3.

Tell how the story finished and what went wrong.

Example: "Finally, Mbe beat the drum too hard, broke it, and lost all his delicious food."

4. The Moral Lesson

Traditional folktales are not just for laughing; they are told to teach us how to be good children. The moral lesson is the important truth the story teaches us.

The Moral of this Story: Greed is bad. It is always better to share what we have with our friends and neighbors, because greed leaves us with nothing in the end.
